So..... WTF Happen to my DP?!

Well, you claim that you arent a noob, then why would you play a sub under tuning like that? You have to admit, thats a noob thing to do. Every sub is designed differently, and I dont claim to know how these are designed, but some will bottom the coil, others will bottom the spiders, and others will bottom the surround first, it is totally design dependent. And I stand by my earlier statement- if you can even see what the surround does when the sub moves at 20 times per second, then you are some kind of prodigy, and they can get rid of klippel analyzers and call them bud analyzers from now on. Nick may very well repair your sub for you, to keep you happy, but he can see as well as I can that is overexcursion damage, and I'm sure he wont repair it twice. So, for future reference, if you feel you need to play at 20 hz, tune the box for 20 hz, otherwise do not play below tuning as this kind of damage can result

Well I see a flaw in your statement. If I'm playing a 40 hz test tone, and the sub is moving about 1.5"'s, that's not the same as playing a 20hz test tone and making the sub move 1.5"'s? Every, and I'll repeat, every time I play below tuning I always watch the sub and make sure it doesn't go into overexcursion.

I have never seen a sub fail that way due to playing under tuning. And 7/10 subs have the same foam surround. Plenty of other things fail first before the surround rips like that.

the distance traveled is the same, true. However, NO human eye can keep up with a sub, and be able to cut the volume by the time you have overstressed the sub, especially when you are PURPOSEFULLY causing it to unload. Do you realize how fast a cone actually moves when it goes from peak to peak? It's alot more than ten miles an hour, I would venture to say it is in the hundreds of miles an hour at higher bass frequencies, I'm sure some investigation can tell you. Look, if you insist on playing your subs below tuning, and causing damage to them, thats fine, it's your sub do what you want with it. But putting up a thread like this, and calling a companies build quality into question for something that you obviously caused is not right, and if I were Nick, and saw this thread, I would have a good case to not warranty your sub.

IMO, doesnt seem like overexcursion. ive played the hell out of some Planet Audio subs back in the day and never torn them, running double their MAX rating to them. getting a good 1.5" excursion out of a 125rms sub LOL..

seems like the surround has rotted, but doesnt seem right for it being

and its obviously not a common occurance, look at how many people have been using death penalties... for years, comps and daily. something happened to this particular sub.

I have seen subs fail this way, also spiders ripping first, motors bottoming. I have a pair of Kappa perfect tens in my garage right now that both have torn spiders due to overexcursion, the motors never bottomed, and the surrounds are fine.

just as an example, 2" peak to peak

out 1 inch, back to resting point 1" in 1 " back to resting point 1", 4" total movement per cycle, 30 hz would be 30 cycles per second. 4 x 30 = 120" of movement per second, or 10 feet per second. 10 feet per second = roughly 7 miles per hour average at 30 hz.

I completely agree with you. There had to have been something wrong with the surround before I even got it. And to cx-7, I'm not bashing IA, and I have no idea where you got that misconception. I absolutely love there product, and the next time I buy another car, IA products will be going in it. Besides, how could I pass up such a b.a. sub for $322 brand new. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I have never seen this happen before to anyones sub on the net, or in my real life experiences. I personally do not believe IA had anything to do with the failure of this surround, it was just a bad surround that's one in a million.

Nick responded on another forum and said he'd be sending out a recone, but I've never done one before. Maybe you guys can help me out on what I need, and how to not screw it up. It's going to be kinda sad ripping everything out of a sub that works perfectly fine, with just a torn surround...

Had the same problem with my Konaki recones I got from IA. Won't be buying from them again.
Care to give me details? Just so you know those recones use a total different cone, so it isn't a defect in the cone. We sale tons of units with no problems. Why didn't you contact me with this problem? Do you have pictures or any information for me? How do you expect me to address the problem when I don't even know it exist.

99.99% of the time when an issue like this happens its user error. This is probably why you didn't contact me, but if your going to post this in a public forum for the world to see then why might as well address it now. Customer Service is what I do, so before you post contact me and we can handle the issue.

Thanks,

Nick

Well, I bought a DP 12 while SSA was having the Black and Blue sale in december. I've only had it installed and playing for a month and a half though. Well, the other day I noticed that there was a crease all the way around the sub on the inside portion of the surround. I've only had about 1100 rms running to it (it's a 1500 rms amp, but with voltage drop I know it's less). It's not even close to hitting the back of my passenger seat, and I've never put it into overexcursion. I emailed Nick today, so hopefully he'll get back to me either monday or tuesday. I'm a little pissed, because I haven't done anything wrong with this sub, and it's practically brand new, so I don't understand why it did this..... Onto the pictures....
