So..... WTF Happen to my DP?!

Well, I bought a DP 12 while SSA was having the Black and Blue sale in december. I've only had it installed and playing for a month and a half though. Well, the other day I noticed that there was a crease all the way around the sub on the inside portion of the surround. I've only had about 1100 rms running to it (it's a 1500 rms amp, but with voltage drop I know it's less). It's not even close to hitting the back of my passenger seat, and I've never put it into overexcursion. I emailed Nick today, so hopefully he'll get back to me either monday or tuesday. I'm a little pissed, because I haven't done anything wrong with this sub, and it's practically brand new, so I don't understand why it did this..... Onto the pictures....

I wonder where and for how long they sit before sold if it,s not humidity/temp. controlled it could cause dry rotting which would not be seen till powering the sub and stretching the foam to expose the cracking

Surround has a crease all the way around the sub in the same location, near the end of the cone. It's in a ported box. Look up my build for a Dodge 1500 regular cab in the Build Logs section.

And I agree with you Rich B, but I would have figured they would have solved that problem long before now. I'm just thinking it was a bad surround from the factory.

I absolutley loved the sub and never had a problem with it, until now.

And in the last picture, that big "scratch" that's on the surround was there when I opened up the box, but I never worried about it since it doesn't go all the way throught the surround..

Dry rot won't happen to a sub that is only 3 mos old, it takes years for that to happen, even on the cheap foam surrounds, IIRC IA uses the impregnated foam surrounds which are much less susceptable to dry rot. That damage looks like overexcursion, maybe playing below tuning. OTOH, it could just be a factory fault. I'm sure we'll find out eventually

I've never had overexcursion problems, and yes I've played 20hz before, but when I do I always have my seat forward and look at the sub while turning up the headunit to make **** sure it never bottoms out or goes into overexcursion.

I wasn't sure if they had a warranty or not, or if it was a deal like with Fi, where there isn't a specified warranty, but if you've got a problem they'll take care of you...

Not to pick a fight, it's really no big deal to me, but you can visually see if a sub goes into overexcursion?!? You need to apply at any of the speaker manufacturers, they can hire you and get rid of all that fancy equipment they have to monitor these things. You said it yourself you played 20 hz, and I'll assume you arent tuned to 20 hz correct? FYI, there are some subs that have a bumped backplate, so you wont hear any overexcursion until it is too late, I am not sure if the DP is one of these subs.

I'm not saying your wrong in any way, but when the surround deforms, or when I can see the cone push the surround up way too far, that's when I know it's going into overexcursion. Neither of which has happened to my sub btw, I'm just making a point. Also, when I sub is going into overexcursion, wouldn't the tinsels possibly break, or the sub bottom out (which even if it did a little I know what that nasty sound sounds like), or other things go wrong before the surround tears. IMO the surround should be the last thing to fail, unless your putting it into a wall socket or feeding it 10k rms for 30 seconds. I've owned a BL12 before this, and the DP's surround just seems rough, "dry", and not as thick is the BL's. I know they're different companies, but for as long as Incriminator has been in business, I wouldn't think they would put out a sub with a bad surround. But maybe it is just simply a bad surround.... Because I'll say right now, I'm definitley not a noob (but I'm definitely not an expert), but I know enough to know how to take care of my equipment and not beat the hell out of them.
