I posted a thread on our local forums asking if anyone wanted to trade my 12" IDMAX for anything they may have. So I get an offer from someone who works at a local tinting shop. Said he had an Eclipse Titanium and some aluminum 12"s so i decided to go check it out. He had a Cherokee with 4 12"s (3 aluminums, 1 titanium in a custom 8 cu. ft. box he had made w/ an Orion HCCA-D5000 on the outside center of it. Pretty nice box, wish I had pics) and it was pretty loud. Said he was gonna take out all of the eclipses and replace them with mofos, and get another D5000 to help power that new setup. So he unscrews the TI and puts it down, putting my IDMAX in that same box to replace it. First off I was thinking,
"3 eclipses and an IDMAX in the same box off the same amp?... ok"
Whatever as long as I got what I wanted. Now while he's putting the idmax in, I take a look at the "TI" to make sure it was the right sub. Looked at the model of it and it said "SW7200". //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif
I asked, "Aren't titaniums the 9100+ series?"
He paused for a moment and said, "Oh no not this one."
So I'm feeling a little awkward now.
"You know what, i'll take one of the aluminums instead." These were 8200's so I knew they'd be the better trade.
So he was like "ok."
He put it in, turned up his HU a little. It was working and all. So I took the 8200, drove home, laid in bed to take a nap.
About 30 minutes later, he calls me back.
"Hey man... your sub's bottoming out. Don't think it likes the power I'm sending to it."
I ask, "How much power you running to it, exactly?"
"1200 watts", he says. But doesn't he know the ID maxes out @ 1000watts? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif He didn't ask me about them in the first place so I could only assume he knew what he was getting.
But whatever, I'm a nice guy. So i drive back to the shop he was at. Once I got there, he told me that a friend of his told me it wasn't because it was overpowered, but rather because the box and port wasn't big enough/of a high enough tuning. By now, I'm waving the WTF flag even more proudly above my head. His friend also stated that it needed a 3 cube box minimum but didn't mention exactly what it needed to be tuned to. I'm pretty tired and confused by now so I just wanted to take my ID back home and call it a day.
So in the end, he was a cool guy and all but I don't think he knew too much about car audio. He gave me his business card and a number of the friend that told him that info I mentioned above about IDMAX's. I don't know, though... for someone that says he's been into this for 26 years, I felt like I knew more about it than he did.
