It happened when I tried to hook a neon up, so that it would come on when the amp came on? All I did was hook it to the remote wire and ground wire. After this, the amp will begin to smoke whenever I hook up the power and ground.

Anybody know why this happened?

Like @maylar said, delay the turn on to the amplifier only. 3 to 5 seconds should take care of it.

Google and Ebay are your friends. Froma quick search and providing these are like new, $2- $400 for the subs and $2- $400 for the amplifiers...
