5 Day after install, while is was driving and adjusting some setting on my new system, smoke rises from my trunk.

Luckily, I had the rear two seats folded down so i knew immediately to turn my subs system off.

Any immediate suspicion as to how or why it happened? My components are listed in my sig, all installed at best buy [$ :X]

Press the cone of the sub inward and see if they are frozen or have abnormal sounds when moved. Your guess is good as ours. Could be the amp or subs... Most likely you pushed the system beyond its limits and caused a failure.

well that weird thing is that the subs keep playing as the smoke filled my car. The AMP max is 1150 and to subs combined max is 1200.. guess that is messing with some close numbers now that i think on it but still..i never imagined to get the smoke-in-mirrors effect...

this might lead to your problem...

well that weird thing is that the subs keep playing as the smoke filled my car. The AMP max is 1150 and to subs combined max is 1200.. guess that is messing with some close numbers now that i think on it but still..i never imagined to get the smoke-in-mirrors effect... [$ :X]

and fyi the "max" ratings are completely useless you will never see that power

always got that impression on the max power quote. regardless, i don't see and plausible reason for all of this. my only guess is i was adjusting eq, crossovers & media expander from my head unit at high volumes(?) Best Buy's garbage [$$] but i figured they'd at least do a reasonable job with the install for the price..

magic smoke indeed mofo. when i want to hot box my car, i can handle that myself, i don't need my subs help. This is outrageous.

The only thing i can be happy about is that nothing was (noticeably) damaged... I just drive with paranoia & doubt now.

You should have went to a car audio shop for the install. Let them check it out if you dont know what you're doing.

if you let the smoke out something is guna be damaged weather you notice it now or later...

is it a ported box? Could be the subs if so. Ive burned many a sub and they stink a little, but ive never seen alot of smoke, atleast not enough to be easily noticed. Smell the amp and see what it smells like. Maybe best buy didnt sand the paint off the ground spot and it burnt? Take some pics so we can help.

Ported. Interesting theory on the ground location. It was a good amount of smoke though..

I'll just have to keep my volume on 10 til i figure this out i suppose.

sounds like some clipping was occurring and heating up them subs....smell anything funny?
