There are other forms of distortion other than clipping. If that's supposed to be a sine wave, unless the screen isn't showing it right, that is not a smooth curve which means it has higher orders of distortion present, not clipping.

You're right. And perhaps I should have been more clear but, the context of this thread is gain setting, not harmonics. What the signal does within the constraints of dangerous distortion may or may not be pleasant to the ear but it won't damage the equipment.

It most certainly is distorted. Maybe not by the DD1's definition, but a THD meter would show it. That waveform would produce a lot of 2nd harmonics. There's a lot of other types of distortion than clipping.
