Small box 12" budget sub

Ive been on the forum for a couple of days and its an interesting read.

Im designing a system for my 02 Escalade and have a few questions -

Ive put together a few "budget" systems in the past and here is what ive come up with so far - any input and advice would be appreciated!

PG RSD Coaxial front and back - Ebay ~ $90 / ea. = $180

head unit stock - with crutchfield converter to keep onstar and steering controls

im planning a truck style single 12" prefax box behind the third row that will yield

.75-.80 cu -

The question is two fold - im considering in that box (sealed) what would sound better given the large cabin?

i listen to everything, but like tight clean crisp bass with good strong volume - no contest, neighbor waking, earth shaking, bowel pounding bass needed here.

I head a stealthbox 10w6 in my 300ZX and loved it - granted it was a hatch and i had an old school punch 200 amp to it, but thats what im looking for.

back to the point.

in that small of a sealed enclosure -

Type-R ? - $150

RE SE ? - $175

PG RSD ? - $80

all the websites indicate that these boxes are 'ideal' in that small of a sealed environment but on forums it indicates that few are running it this way. Thoughts?

Im leaning on the PG, because then i could get PG and i wouldn't mind having a single branded system top down.

Amp -

is there a single 6 channel amp that i should get and make my life simple?

otherwise, since im an ebay *****, what options should i think about?

I

You could go with a Kicker KX700.5 for the amp. I believe they are around $260 on ebay. This will give you 70x4 and 420x1, but you can expect a bit more because the birthsheet on mine was 916, I believe.

And if you haven't purchased the speakers yet, go with the RSd Component set and run the amp bridged to give them 140x2 and run the coaxial rears off of head unit power. The PG RSd65CS is $87 shipped from ebay. I have that setup going and it sounds great!

Edit - I'm getting, 182x2 @ 4ohm + 468x1 @ 2ohm @ - at 12.5v (amp benched 910 ~ 30% increase over specs)

thank you for your reply.

the problem with running from the head unit is that its a factory bose system so this may not be an option.

should i consider around that much wattage to the PG components ? i dont want to skimp on the places that really matter, like the amp, so im comfortable spending the most on that unit to be quality.

Well, after reading that you were on a budget (as I was when I upgraded), and that you were interested in one amplifier to run everything, and that a 10w6 off of 200 watts was up to your standards, I immediately thought of the KX700.5. There are others out there, but I just have experience with one.

Is your car a coupe? If so, I would try running no rear fill and just the components. I am doing this and I can tell you I will never want/need rear fill. This gives you the opportunity to use 182x2 for the components and 468x1 for the subwoofer.

If not then the amp should give you about 80x4 for the speakers and I'm not sure how the components are off that much power, but should probably be fine and still go with components up front and coaxials in the rear and use 80x4 for the speakers and then the same 468x1 for the subwoofer.

As far as the sub; I'm in the same boat as you - looking for something that will get loud and sound good off of ~500 watts

EDIT - I just read that it is an escalade (reading>me).

My biggest concern is not so much the cost of the sub or the model.

just what will provide a good bass sound in that small of enclosure.

im not sure why all the spec sheets im looking at show .75 cu as the ideal sealed enclosure for most 12" subs with very few real world applications of this size box?

hopefully im missing a lot of forum members who are sucessfully and happily running type R's, PG RSD's and RE SE's in .75 cu boxes.

UCF52,

to your point and to pose another question

has anybody retained the factory GMC bose system and replaced components, added a sub, but kept the rear component set factory?

if this is a possibility it might work and save a little $ in the process.

I'd like to help, but I only have experience with one sub, so I don't want to feed you incorrect information. Your best bet would be to search around a bit more.

You can do that with products such as the JL CleanSweep (there are cheaper alternatives out there), but an aftermarket head unit would be your best bet. I mean your stereo is only as good as its weakest component. If I was you I would save up a little more cash and do it all right the first time.

I had the same problem. Not so much "What will fit".. But "what will fit AND sound decent". My solution was Soundsplinter's RLi- line up. They require so little space, sound awesome and get pretty loud when you want them to. Check them out sometime, or read reviews on them if you're wiery about them.

What is your max budget for a subwoofer? And are you deadset on a 12"? The reason I ask is because I just finished up my sub install using a ID IDQ10v3 in a .8 cu.ft (.75 with displacement) enclosure. It is being fed 400w @ 2ohms, and it really kicks. In your case of filling such a large space, my 5 series has a 4 sided steal (like you wouldn't hear me yelling in it) trunk which makes it hard to even hear most subwoofers. Well, my friends actually believe I have a subwoofer now. I personally could care less about how loud a sub gets as long as it preserves sound quality foremost. This sub gets very loud off of 400w though, which seems to be more of what you're after or perhaps need. Only drawback is the $229-239 price tag (well worth however). My expertise on what is good is far below most people here though. My 2..
