six inch rule, for components

Ive read several times that tweeters need to be mounted within six inches of the mid, so they sound like one speaker. If so, why even bother with components, why not a nice set of coaxials?

Ive also been told that since my deck has time alignment, that it wont matter. Is there any truth to the six inch thing, or is it bullshit?

very close to correct for best imaging...coax mixes the mid/tweet too close...now don't get me wrong, they work awesome, but listen to a set of coax, then a set of system packs, then you can hear the diff.

Most coaxs sound crappy because they are basically junk speakers with crappy crossovers. Car audio companies market component sets because you can get better imaging with crappy stock mounting locations. If done right a coax or semi coax can be a better sounding speaker especially if it is a point source unit like the older kef uniQ stuff or aura mr's etc... Also yeah, about 6" is good or it funks up your stage... male vocals down low, females on your dash etc... you get the point..

Yeah, I was wondering about stock locations. My stock tweeters were actually on the dash. Alright, Im gonna break out the holesaw, and mount the tweets.

i heard the rule of thumb was to try and mount the tweet within half the diameter of the mid, not sure if thats rite.
