What I think is move of an argument over which is more economical is the fact when people go out and say I am going to get a bike to save money on gas.
Ok, yes, but what about your bike payment? Or your other vehichle payments if you have them. In my case and reason why I am not riding around on a HD Sportster right now is due to car payment, paying insurance on two vehichles right now as well. So where would I be saving? I wouldn't, not till the bike was paid off.
Also I say it depends where you live on what is more economical as far as the bike thing goes. Even if you live down south and winters are not all that bad, you still have rain storms from time to time. And if you say you just put on a rain coat and go to town, then no........no you do not, unless you have no other form of transportation.
