simple n00b question about ohms

Is there a difference between lets say 500 watts at 4ohms as opposed to 500 watts at 1ohm? It'd be better to run it at 4 ohms right? Even at 1000 watts at 4 ohms, would that be less strain on my electric system than 1000 watts at 1 ohm?

4 ohms would more than likely be more efficient than a 1 ohm load

Not sure about strain on the elctrical system, but in general the 4 ohm configuration will give you less distortion than a lower impedance.
