Today on the way to work I started noticing distortion in my door speakers and then the bass started becoming weaker and weaker (from the sub). The distortion (door speakers) became almost interference-like as if listening to a weak radio station and then seemed to be clipping. It was very strange - something I have never heard before. I have been a "non-professional" installer for over 10 years and am pretty knowledgeable about set-ups - Everything is wired correctly, tuned correctly and taken care of. I literally just re-set everything back up and got it the way I want it within the last couple weeks after switching from a bulky box to a custom fit enclosure and this is kind of a sad time as it would be for anyone who loves their music!!
My set-up consists of 2 amps - one 4 channel and one mono - both Hifonics BRX 1400.1 and 640.4 - and a kinetic battery. 3 sets of RCAs running from Clarion HU
My sub is a Sundown Audio SA-10 wired @ 2ohms which is brand new but both amps I've had from previous setup ran for about a year
The first thing that came to mind was a problem with the sub - maybe blown because it is slightly overpowered but I quickly ruled this out, the sub is fine.
Back to the problem...
So, when I pulled into nearest shopping center to tinker with my stuff the first thing I noticed was that the sub was no longer moving - I turned everything off and back on - poof subwoofer playing.. but as I turned up the volume is got quieter and stopped - and door speakers became distorted.
So I turned it down to low volume, returned to the trunk where I noticed a very strange high pitched """beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee""" from sub but not like an electrical :whine: but more like a dial tone but much more high pitched.. AND IT CONTINUED TO DO THIS WITH RCA CABLES UNPLUGGED. So, I just so happened to have my cordless drill so I popped my sub out and tested each coil just to see if one was bad. Nope, both were fine, no weird sound, no crackling or popping. Just clean movement. I added volume just to verify the clean movement and everything still okay. I left the sub disconnected and went on my way to work.
Now here's the most strange part..
As I added volume (keep in mind sub is disconnected, and rca's are disconnected from the sub amp) my interior speakers begin sounding distorted and started borderline clipping.. Whatttt? sooo guess what I do? Yep, take ALL power and GROUND from sub amp and can you guess what happens? Crisp, clear beautiful sound from the mids and highs - back to normal. Weird or something that is common?? Is the amp bad? wtf would cause this? If the amp IS BAD - could it re-route a dirty signal through the power source? Is that even possible??
