Security Question concerning key-fobs

Ok this is the deal. I am wondering if it is possible to get the code to someone's key-fob to open their car/trunk. The reason I ask this is b/c at around 3am I was chillin at my friends house and a van drove past *real* slow like, turned around and came back *real* slow like, not as if to turn around. the Van stopped right infront of his drive an stood there for atleast a couple of minutes. We were inside and able to see this, but those in the van could not see us.

My friend and I blew it off at first, but as I left his house approx 5-10min later as I was going to my car his car lights/interior lit up and his trunk opened as it would if someone had pressed his key fob. Only thing is, he was inside at the time and nowhere near his keys. I went back inside and got him and we came back outside to check it out and we then saw a car drive off ( which is rather rare in his culdesac at 3am )

Am I being paranoid for no reason? Did he almost get jacked? Either way he is going to get an alarm, any suggestions on a good cost/value alarm?
