I have a delima........I have a 2003 dodge dakota quad cab and have very little space for a sub box. I have a box now with a JL W1 10". I did the calculations and my cu. ft is .56. The box is a wedge that measures 14" T x16 W x 7" @ bottom and 4" @ top.It is built with 3/4" MDF. I can go a little bigger but if I build it out of 3/4" MDF it still will not give me the cu. ft. I need for either the W1 or W3. Does the box need to be made out of 3/4" MDF? Can I build it out of 1/2" birch? I have looked into getting the Pioneer TS-SW2541D slim fit, but I am afraid the performance will not be as good as the JL. Any and all opinions are needed. Thank You!!

For small boxes like that, I don't see why you couldn't use 1/2" MDF if you wanted. Single sub set up, with walls no longer than those, once properly built (glued) you shouldn't see anything flex because of the thinner wood. I've built a few boxes out of 1/2" and they've all been solid.

I just checked those measurements and I'm getting only .5 cu/ft using 1/2" wood. Are you sure on the .56 using 3/4"?

You are right... I got .419 with what I have now. If I build my box out of 1/2" with the deminsions of 16" x 15 x 5" top and 8" bottom I will get .66 cu. ft. Can use Birch or should I use MDF? I have not seen MDF in 1/2" only 3/4". Thanks for your input.

I will try to build it out of 1/2". I really do not want to use a shallow sub due to performance loss. I have my hear set on the W3v3 JL 10".

My Menards carries 1/2 MDF. Lowes does not. Lowes does have 1/2 birch though.
