School taking phones?

Just wondering if this is legal or not.. My school can take a student's phone and then proceed to keep it untill he/she pays $5 for it. Then its $10 for the 2nd time and $15 for the 3rd. I'm not sure if that completely legal to take my possessions and then force me to purchase them back. Just a thought though.

seems pretty fair if you are wasting the teachers' time and the school districts money by texting or talking on it while you are supposed to be there learning or whatever... hell I got detention for chewing gum back in teh day, so cut your losses and learn from them.

Doesnt sound legal to me but im not an expert, Sounds almost like extortion. Most of the time we get 2 options depending on the teacher, 1) Give them the phone and get it back at the end of the day, or 2) Keep the phone and get written up and get ISS or something. Some teachers dont care.
