Scan Speak R2904/7000 set up, please advice.

His is oval because it is the modified driver from Genesis.

Ok, thanks! I guess Genesis will say they have improved the unmodified version. So that leaves me with a couple of questions.

Is their version regarded as better sounding than the unmodified scan-speak, by car audio buffs

and

What purpose does the larger oval plate serve? I would think that for some installs, a smaller round plate would make it a little easier to fit, so it must have some other advantage.

If I were to guess, I'd say it has something to do with baffle step diffraction...the same reason it's recommended to flush mount flanged tweeters in home audio cabinets, and speakers like the Cain & Cain Abby have their mid drivers mounted on parabolic baffles. Helps the frequency response...

Ok, thanks again. I read about flush mounting drivers but don't know about any of the other stuff. Will do some searching to understand better.

the shape has nothing to do with baffle step...infact you can't flush this because the outer edge is beveled:pissed:....

it does how ever make it a ton easier to place in areas like a pilars and allow you to cram it closer to your mirange driver beacuse it's not a circle...

Ok, thanks for that. I guess I assumed it was close to 4" across the narrow part, but having a closer look, it's probably a bit less than 3". So I can see how the oval shape actually allows for a better fit in most car installs, also allowing it to be closer to the midrange.

From looking at the picture of your install, with the gap between your tweeter and midrange, it looks like the round plate could have fit in there just as close to your midrange, but in that case the round plate would have been right up against your midrange. I'm guessing that having the tweeter right next to your midrange wouldn't allow you to adjust the tweeter angle exactly how you wanted it, so if you had the round plate, it probably would have been about another half inch from your midrange. Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. For me, I'd have to use the round plate version so I could easily exchange it with the other tweeters.
