Running

Does anyone run very often? As for exercise? I am trying to get my 1 mile run under 10 minutes. What tends to happen is that I get out of breath. I don't smoke, so I don't know.

The issue is about at the 5 minute mark, my throat starts to get hot. I assume this is because of the friction of moving air in and out at a fast pace. What actions can I take to force my lungs to get more air in them?

Just keep doing it, you'll gradually be able to run longer and longer without getting out of breath. Also breathe deeply, don't breathe in your upper chest.

And be glad you don't have a vocal chord/heart disorder that impedes your efforts //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Regulate your breathing. Stop concentrating on the time it akes to do the mile and concentrate on form and breathing then time comes naturally.

I am still at around 12 min/per mile avg on my daily 3 miles runs.

Should I try to run slower? When I am running as fast as I can, I can't really breath deep. It is more fast breathing.
I had the same problem, I would run out of breath. I suggest you slow down and get your breathing pattern down and then speed up once you get it.

Does this mean run slower?

My goal (like I said last year) is to do 1.5 in 10.

Should the appropriate strategy be running 1.5 in whatever time I can, or do to 1 mi as fast as I can and then ease up on the last .5?

breathe in through your mouth and out of your nose. it helps you conserve oxygen and control your breathing
I believe you have it backwards. You want to breathe IN through your nose, and breathe OUT from your mouth. This will result in the sinuses located in your nose warming up the air and humidifying the air slightly to prevent drying out your lungs and throat.

Get the the point where you can run 1.5 and it will improve the more often you do it. Do not run too fast because after a certain point your heart rate becomes too high and you start having anerobic respiration (without oxygen, not strengthening the lungs) as opposed to aerobic respiration. General rule of thumb : Be able to talk/ hold a conversation while doing your cardio, and you're doing about the right amount

So the burning sensation is based on a humidity issue, not a friction issue?

Will this getting out of breath thing work itself out? I am at the point where I can do the whole thing without getting that tired, it's just I run out of air.
it should eventually. how big are you? losing just 10lbs helped me with breathing a ton

you can, but for me, the best way to help my breathing is to push them to the limit every so often

x2

I used to be able to run a 5 min mile in high school, now I can barely run a 10 min mile :fail:

Also don't run as fast as you can, you can run on a treadmill and it will tell you how fast you are running to get an idea of the speed you need to run to reach your goal.

Or you can be like me and while I am running I calculate my speed based on the number of laps and the time it took me to get to where I am....

It gets up to about 170 beats...measured by that thing you can hold on too. That is a 7.5 mph.

I am getting better and better at 6 mph....where I don't start to get out of breath until later.

Today, I will try to do 1.5 @ 5.5...

I am 24, 6', 180 lbs if that matters.

Start slower, and breath more deeply, and then gradually learn to run faster while still breathing more deeply. Deep breathing doesn't have to mean slow breathing, it just means you breathe in the bottom of your lungs (and therefore utilize your entire lungs instead of just the top shelf). Shallow breathing is very inefficient.
