running high powered component speakes off of a head unit*

Is there any danger in running high powered low sensitive speakers off a head unit. I plan on ordering some alpine Spr-17s components. They are rated at 110 watts rms and my head unit only delivers 25 watts rms. Would I risk damaging the speakers by underpowering them. Now before anyone trys and get on me ( cuz I am a noob, but not an idiot) I am a bass palyer and in the bass world there is a such thing as underpowering a speaker and burning the voice coil.... so is that possible for car speakers?

it will be kinda pointless. Most decks don't even put out a true 25 watts per speaker. Your going to get minimal output from the new speakers. Pretty much a waste on running a decent set of comps if you are not going to amp them.

Steadily clipping the internal amp in the head unit will send DC (square wave) to the speaker and certainly potentially damage it unless protections in the passive crossover prevent it or isolate.

The 25W rating is not RMS, actual is closer to 12-15W RMS. Just don't turn it up too much with only the head unit power.

Exactly.....

Can it be done safely? Sure, just dont crank the HU too high trying to get output and clip it.

Would I do it? Naw, I would wait until I get my amps because your not going to get the full impact from the comp set off HU power. But thats up to you.

wrong, again...

clipping will NOT damage any speaker, ever...
