Hey guys, this forum looks great...

I want to add an aftermarket stereo which will be concealed in the glove box but also keep my stock radio in use. I was thinking of doing this with a few double throw 12vdc relays which will enable me to switch between the aftermarket and the stock radio by simply operating the switch for the coil on the relay.

has anyone done this and if so please let me know your thoughts..

thanks

ive seen it done more with classic cars so they can keep the original look but all the oem radio would do is power up thats it
If all he wants is the original radio to power on, then no relays are necessary.

However, if you want the original to remain functional and the speakers to automatically switch over when the aftermarket one is on, relays will be needed on each speaker channel. You can use your remote turn on from the hu to energize'em.

Why are you doing this? Get headphones...? Your saying that you want two seprate systems in your car. Does this include the speakers too? Like those have stated, you can relay the fuck out of your car and even make 3way selector switches for each speaker and tie them all in to one switch. but really, WTF are you doing ALL THIS WORK for? Is it a new car? Lease? mom's, so she wont know about it. ANTI theft?

You could build something, but why?

hi all

i stumbled across this page because im looking for the same thing, ill explain MY reasons for doing it...

I have a stock stereo conected up to a 6 disc changer in the boot which i dont want to a) take out or b) leave in the boot dead.

I also want an mp3 ready hu like the new alpine ida x305 model (which doesnt have a cd drive at all) which displays all the ipod data on screen.

Im fortunate enough to have 2u of space in the dash so i want to run the stock hu for cds/radio etc and have use of the alpine unit just to play mp3s.

Ive done about 2 weeks of reasearch and theres no other way to do this,

- You CAN hook up mp3 to the stock radio, but you dont get full control of the ipod or screen info

- You can buy mp3 radios with CD slots but none are compatible with the CD changer.

Might seem a little odd, like why dont I just buy a new mp3/cd unit and replace the cd changer with a compatible one? Truth is I want to keep the car as stock as possible but merely want to incorporate mp3 into the car with a decent interface like the one you have on the ida x305

So thats my reason! Still havent worked out a definative way to achieve this though.
