Rock bass...

What is the lowest frequency a bass guitar or any other rock-based musical instrument can play? I was reading that 41Hz is the lowest for a bass guitar, but that doesn't sound right to me... any ideas?

im sure it all depends on the bass. different length in wire fatter wire... so on

it more depends on the band and how they tune their guitar.

ya, i'd probably go sealed, or atleast a lower tune if you want the best sq for rock. don't count out synthetic bass tracks, either. Ever listened to a korn cd on a system? The bass is definitely enhanced digitally on their early recordings, as well as a lot of mainstream rock albums in recent years.

Standard 4 string has an open E of 41.3 Hz. 5 and 6 string will typically have a B string a half octave lower. Sub-contra bass has a C# at 18hz. Those aren't real common. If you consider the medium for which most music is produced, radio, it makes sense that there isn't a whole lot of musical information below 40hz. Radio can't transmit below that frequency.

Most kick-drums and bass guitars are barely mixed in the studio much below 50hz.
