Rock bass...

ya, i'd probably go sealed, or atleast a lower tune if you want the best sq for rock. don't count out synthetic bass tracks, either. Ever listened to a korn cd on a system? The bass is definitely enhanced digitally on their early recordings, as well as a lot of mainstream rock albums in recent years.

 
Standard 4 string has an open E of 41.3 Hz. 5 and 6 string will typically have a B string a half octave lower. Sub-contra bass has a C# at 18hz. Those aren't real common. If you consider the medium for which most music is produced, radio, it makes sense that there isn't a whole lot of musical information below 40hz. Radio can't transmit below that frequency.
