I sent my friend to Pepboys to pick up a used yellowtop they have for about 65- 70ish and get it installed (cause I didn't feel like doing it). He got a re35.1 and xxx 18 quad 1.4 wired to .35. I was told the amp is stable at .5 and should do about 2kw and with impedance rise, .35 should come to about .5. The amp kept going in to protect so before trying to ditch the amp for something different, I figure we'd go ahead and try and trouble shoot it.

We didn't do big 3 'cause we finished the install at 10:30 pm. He also has a "temporary" dual radio with sub preouts until his real one arrives. I figured we'd give the radio the benefit of the doubt with it's preouts and say his old (since 95) stock battery couldn't give up the power.

I SPECIFICALLY sent him to get the yellow top installed.

He calls me:

"Pat, I just got home. The guy there said I don't need a new battery."

What???

"The guy there said what's happening is that since the amplifier is bolted to the box, it's not getting enough airflow underneath it to the insides."

(the amp doesn't have a cover plate for the internals)

Carl, the amp is supposed to be sealed up anyway. If there's a cover on the internals, how would there be any airflow in there anyway?

"Oh."

God **** ****ing idiot at Pep Boys. I know my friend is slow and suggestive but I sent him there for a reason, ****it.

2000wrms... the kid likes rap but my old Rubicon 15 on 300w was almost more than he can stand. I know this is overkill and he'll never have it put out more than 800w but it's all about having the balls //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

What I was told...

~1950ish with good electicals, which we're on the way to getting.

I realize it's not going to make that power. But then again, I'm not going to set it so it would get anywhere near that power. I figured the amp wasn't stable either. At least I get to make him throw money at electricals while I can. As long as the amp keeps going in to protect, I can get him to put money where it's needed (because he refuses to therwise). Like I said, last thing we do is replace the amp. No bubble to be bursted, tommy.

Imdepance rise?

Not to say its not a solid amp, but those claims are a bit far fetched.

.5 ohm daily MAYBE, but that would be risking it IMO. Depends on how much yoru imp. rise actually is.

Only thing "we" can do is upgrade everything until we find it's the weakest link!

Did I say it goes into protect with the gain all the way down and modest volume? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

First goes the cd player, then the battery, then the alt. Finally, after all that's done, which he wouldn't do under any other circumstances, we replace the amp.

On a side note, what's this amp do at 2 ohm anyway? Also, I doubt it but would the way I have it wired make a difference?

Right now it's (disreguard the polarity, I forget what that is)

|++++| | | | | |--------|

as opposed to (again, disreguarding the polarity of whatever's marked 'cause I don't remember)

|++| |--| |++| |--|

2000 wrms daily? you never gonna use all that wattage on a daily bases. People only use that low of impedance for competitions, and your ears will never hold up to that kind of abuse everyday...
