Rob Array meets Black Label Society

I got my new camera to record a cheap video of

the Rob Array in action {NSB + PT2} array. Video

quality is poor, but it shows what I've been telling you

about it's SPL capabilities.

DVD now playing ..... Black Label Society ....

Radio Shack SPL meter says ................ >126dB[c] peaks ... ~120dB[c] midrange at the listening position ....

http://home.pacbell.net/lordpk/misc/SPL1.AVI

The microphone on the camera is over-loaded and distortion is recorded on the video. Rest assured, the

music is nice and clean ..........

P.S. There is no woofers in the room. This output is being

generated from an array of 4" 5 watt speakers that cost

49 cents each driven by 3400w/ch ....

/muhwahahahaha //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif :p :bun:

P.S. I only had it turned up 75% ... and the EQ on to tame the midrange output //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I can hit those SPL numbers with less power but the amplifiers are clipping

occasionally and distortion rises. By using the bigger amps the sound is clean

at high SPL. You don't realize how loud it is until you leave the room for 2 minutes

and walk back in, you think 'fvck this is loud, turn the sh!t down'. You've been

to 'clean concerts' ? Where the sound is very good and loud but you aren't

annoyed, but later your ear rings to confirm the silent torture you didn't notice //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

I also drove the array with a LM4780 chipamp amp .. it works nicely but you don't

have the slam, but the sound is nice and it would work very good for a normal person.

Wow, nice SPL but do you really need it that loud, I got some speakers that will do that, but they are a 12" and a 3" horn. And I don’t need that much wattage lol. Also, check out Lab.gruppen amps they are ultra clean and you can get the drive you need for all those transducers

I like concert SPL in home, but the trick is to make it very clean sounding.

I have EV's HP640 horns with DH1 drivers and other compression driver/horns.

I have used alot of proaudio drivers in my time and I like the stuff alot. But the

SQ from a pro rig can't compete with the line array SQ -> in home.

If it was that easy to get SQL in the home by just buying some compression

drivers and large horns mated to 12" midranges then my audio quest would

be cake walk, but the reality is... it's not as good in quality soundwise as

my demon desires. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I can hit high SPL with my horns too but the music is not tolerable. The

array I can listen to higher SPL with less fatigue.

I have QSC amps coming in, PLX for my big project. UPS just deliver another

one today... today is D-0ay for the jr. array, four PLX all bridged. I will post

pics later tonight. The tweeters will see double headroom, wonder what it will

sound like? // harr harr /evil

Go for it man, QSC, Lab.Gruppen, and the old HH V800 amps are my favs. QSC amps are just so clean and bright without getting pushy. I guess you got the rig you need if you like high SPL, and I’m sure you neighbors love you for it lol.... What are you running as your pre-amp?

What are you running as your pre-amp?

For the jr. whopper system or the future 6 dollar hamburger system ? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I'm not a believe of audio voodoo as my electronics/audio experience has served me

well... that said, the big cash goes into speakers, then a massive power plant.

The environment sometimes can't be dealt with as you have to accept what you have, so the rest of the cash is whatever does the job without spending big coin.

Right now I have no sound issues using the $125 universal DVD player,

it plays everything well. That feeds my Roland M1000 mixer [$250], then feeds

the Behringer DCX2496 [$250].. the mixer is just used as a digital volume knob,

ie -> DVD player digital out -> Roland digital in -> DCX digital in -> DCX internal

D/A -> Amps.

I snagged the Roland to prove a point.. Can you hear the different between

this digital pathway vs. a pathway that has many A/D, D/A conversions?

I have it setup for all digital until it hits the output OR 5 conversion steps.

so far, nobody is able to hear a difference... rofl ...

I'd be happy with any Denon, HK, etc., receiver as the preamp feeding the

Behringer, all analog path. On the other hand, I do like the idea of maybe

getting a Parasound Halo preamp for $800 as it has XLR output at 8V that

would match the gain structure better. Either way, the cost is peanuts

when you look at the big picture.

You won't see me buying $10k tube preamps or CD players //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

If the folks here took a trip to my house, I'd have them cured of their

audio voodoo .................. /hehe ... the line array slam would fix the

chemical imbalance in the head /./..... hehehe

Do you like the DCX2496 cross-over? I have worked alot with the DEQ2496 and the DSP8024 EQs and their nice but they have their weird moments as with most Behringer gear. The D->A on it sounds nice and smooth.

For $120 you can get an old school boring analog crossover that only does

one trick.

But for $250 shipped you get all these features. {too many to list}

http://www.behringer.com/DCX2496/index.cfm?lang=ENG

If there is no DCX2496 and you want something good, the

the DBX is cool for double the cost or spend $1000 on Rane

or $3000 - $5000 on a DEQX system or $10k+ on a computer XO system.

$250 gets the job done. I really like the LR 8th order slope vs. LR 4th order,

it gave the line array a boost in SQ because I can run the tweeters much

lower in crossover point. I'm the only one taking PT2's down to 1.7Khz

whereas most other users will do 2.5 - 3.5khz using simpler crossovers.

As I sweep the crossover frequency I improve imaging at the lower crossover

point.

I run those NSB's at LR 8th order 65hz and I'm surprised at how much bass

I can get which keeping excursion low. /bonus

The next feature that I use is the programmable settings. I like to use the

parametric EQ to set different moods and I program those settings from

mellow [setting 1] to aggressive [setting 9] .. There is alot of preset storage

capability. For the line array here is an idea on what I do with it.

Lets say I feel like playing mellow tunes like Diana Krall and low SPL, I load

preset 1. It tames the midrange response, boosts treble and cuts alot of midbass

because the line array was design with a ported box tuned to peak high at 100hz. Sounds great.

Later, I throw in some Eagles and medium SPL, the sound is thin so I load

preset 4, 5 or 6 to see what sounds nice. There is less EQ as I load higher

numbers.

Eventually if i want to kill someone, I load preset 9 which is flat..

There is no reason why a speaker or sound system can't produce a different

sonic signature, people are too brainwashed into accepting one sound when

you can do much more with a $250 device like this.

I also add 15mS delay to one tower for a 'concert hall' effect. If the music

is mellow, 25mS is nice, but for Slayer the 15mS is better otherwise the sound

is slurred. /hehe

I was playing the Modern Drummer Festival DVD and at that moment in time

Dream Theater was on and the kid next door {19 year old?} came over

and had no choice but to sit down and listen to the song. He's bass head

with vigin ears... after the song was done, I said "Time to play some punishment... " ... walks to get Opeth DVD .......... By this time he already

bailed the room and exited into the garage. /hehehe .. he didn't want to come back in fearing that it would be

crazier .... the power of suggestion!

Today my old boss from work {Rock N'Roll guy} is going to audition.. I'll keep

you posted on his thoughts. He has old school Klipsch speakers and use

to play in a band.

I can make this array more brutal on midrange with the coolant mod //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif But that cost $100 for a bottle...
