I recieved my RL-s on Friday and spent the weekend testing\building boxes.
Thus far it has been in:
4 cube tuned to 46 (spl)
5 cube tuned to 30
8 cube tuned to 16
5 cube sealed
The first two applications were obviously not ideal for this driver, but I had them on hand so I gave them a shot. If you model either of those up you come up with a VERY peaky response and it shows when you use them. Neither box sounded good. I am sure there are plenty of people out there that would love the 5 cubes 30hz application if you listen to rap or whatever, but I don't so it wasn't for me. In the spl box it was quite loud, not quite on par with the brahma extreme which it was built for but the RL-s is not built for spl either, so those results weren't suprising.
On to a more appropriate application...The 8 cube box just didn't do much for me, got **** low, moved lots of air but seemed like it lacked the output in more of the area of that I listen too. Don't get me wrong, hearing some bass guitar in "My heads in mississippi" was pretty **** cool, but the kickdrum just wasn't there.
The sealed box, I thought, was the best as far as output, fr and sq went. It sounded nice and got pretty loud for a sealed 15 (135 on the TL @29 hz). Keep in mind though, I have been driving around for the last few days with the brahma extreme in an spl box. It doesn't matter if the RL-s is has more excursion and sd in that situation, it's just not going to be able to keep up by a pure output standpoint. Throw the brahma extreme in a sealed box and the comparison would be even more ridiculous in favor of the RL-s, its all in the application.
Sq was quite good, just on par with my xxx. The only thing that jumped out at me was that the RL-s uses a linear spider, that kindof suprised me for a driver that costs that much.
Anyway, these are just intial impressions and tests....on to the pics (on SIN, you may have to register)
