Very true. "Occult" or "chronic" depression---or cyclothymic disorder--- is much harder to diagnose than some others. Also, many with these issues still "have" alot to be happy about and don't exhibit the deep depressional states that bipolar d/o exhibit. Chronic depression is many times much harder to deal with than the "lows" that bipolar folks deal with, too.Depression can be hidden and doesnt always mean you're unhappy. You could have everything in the world you want/need and still be depressed.

Terrible shame to think that he may not have gotten the professional care and prescription(s) he needed, tho I don't know enuff to assume this is absolutely true... sometimes the disease just resists everything , and pushes one over the edge.Depression is a horrible illness. I have been struggling with it for years. RIP brother.
