RF subs overrated?

my friend had a pair of the P3's 12's dual 4 ohm wired for a 2 ohm load to the amp in a ported box 1.75 tuned to 35 hz and he had a Viper 2000.1 amp for them and i set his gain for 500 watts (since that's what the subs handled) and then we were cruisin around town yesterday and all of a sudden we smell burning, was playin stuntin like my daddy by lil wayne and birdman and the subs had been fried, he thinks the subs were overrated, i think it's the amp was underrated, thoughts on this, i thought rf subs could handle alot...atleast there rms atleast. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/ponder.gif.ec2527b23f1d287b60dcbba54f95edba.gif

I used to have the same subs power by the same amp in a 4 cube box and Never once did they they get stinky off 1200 rms.

yup, they lasted a good 20 minutes till they finally failed
