Reprogram New Remote on old system

I have a 1994 Clifford system and the remote died. I have the original manual so I do know how to program it. They don't make this remote anymore so I bought what the store owner said was a replacment remote. The instructions that came with the new remote have a different series of channels/valet presses to program that remote. My question is do I use the old instructions or the new one. Is the programming based on the new remote or the old alarm system?
