Reconing Failure? Pics & Vids. Need some feedback.

Also... before you try to put too much power to it, glue the top of the triple joint around the outside of the former. I notice it has not been glued there.

In any event, it may not have any issues -- it's hard to push perfectly straight on it and, if you don't push just right it may scrape.

look closely, you can see that the glue has penetrated that joint from the back....

Why do people do recones with manilla folders and index cards?

Is it really that hard to get some sheets of paper and use the correct shim.

On a side note, check to see that its not the tinsels scratching something, I got tricked once thinking it was the coil scratching but it was just the tinsel rubbing on the spider making noise.

Well, I guess it's done for....

Even free air you get the rubbing sound. Not sure what to do. Send it off I guess.

One thing I was thinking was that maybe the alignment with the cone and former are off, not the motor or the process of reconing. I used 4 index cards and put them about 3/4 of an inch sticking out above the motor. It was not loose and using 5 would not have been possible. You couldn't have fit them. The spider is perfectly center and the surround sets even too.

Hmmmm..........

Here's a vid of the sub free air at 40 hz.

what brand of motor is it ?

A FI recone (or whatever) is not going to be universal to all 3" coil drivers.... that may be your problem...
it's an RE XXX early 04 model. the motor shoud be perfectly aligned as i had previously reconned it with an SX 12 soft parts. the gap of the motor was cleaned out before i even sent it off to him.

if i remember i believe he said he got the recone kit from Sundown Audio.

if it was a Fi recone and ordered even as an 05 kit it would still work with that motor. the early 04 is identical to the late 04/05. they just have different outside finishes. though either way i'm sure even if he got it from Fi or Sundown they are pretty knoledgeable about the motor and are well aware ot the gap size.

sorry for your loss man. i was hoping to see it in action. ask and see if you can get a hook up for your loss and have it reconed again. no harm in trying.

since your at a still point with it. i say hook that bish up to your amp and just play it till it pops. not daily or anything just play it with your amp maxed out. it stick it in a wall socket. gets vid too.

He just got the basket from me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I use thin sheets of paper for coil alignment myself -- have not yet had one turn out bad when I used the right sized parts (woops, wrong ID coil pwnt).

Chad,

Indeed... I put one together without gluing that top joint from the top in addition to the glue from the back once. While it did work for a little while, the triple joint broke under stress.
