Recone subs? I need your opinion :(

The big thing for the truck is coming...just gotta find time to finish the **** thing //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

Thats what been said about that sortve thing for over half a decade now. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Who is the daddy of you???

Most of the glue has worn off inside the former I think. I did like you said and played it while pushing on the edge of the cone slightly to make it rub.

Its still playing kind of weird but Im pretty confident once I get some real power on it the rest will wear off.

Its definitely getting better //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Thanks Dave!

laying down glue, then dropping it in, then shimming it after the glue is down may be part of the issue. I prefer to shim it tightly using printer paper. It works perfectly on a 3" coil. Once it is shimmed tightly and the spider/surround are about 3/8" above their landings i lay down a nice bead of glue and then press the cone assembly down. That way you know the thing is aligned the moment it contacts the glue and nothing has a chance to get out of alignment.

But if the problem is just glue, and in your case it sounds very likely due to the cone being locked and breaking free, im sure it will play fine once you beat on it for a little bit //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Thats a good tip actually. At first I laid the glue, then shimmed it, but the spider wasnt sitting down in the glue when I shimmed it. The surround was holding it up at the lip of the basket.

^^^ Thats definitely how Ill do any future recones though, shim it, then glue the spider down.

BTW I played it a little more and its not rubbing one bit through the first little bit of travel.

I have a small amount of rub when the coil is almost bottoming out, but I think once I get some power on it the rest will wear right off.

Thanks! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
Good to hear it was only a glue problem.
Yup. Im soo happy I dont have to recone it again or tear it apart. Although, now after playing around with it Im getting really anxious to get it in //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif. Which kind of ***** since I dont have the time to work on the audio part of my car for a while.

Got tons of **** going on so it will probably be a while before Im able to get any more work done on this part of the project.

BTW anyone interested check out the build log in my sig and let me know what you think.

Do you think a 40-80hz sweep would get rid of it over night?
Most of the glue is worn off at this point. Im guessing theres just some left near the top of the former. Im just not able to get the needed excursion out of the sub with the little power I am using with this small plate amp.

Ive worn off any glue that was further down the former and closer to the motor gap. With some real power on it and a couple sweeps Im sure the rest will wear right off.

I mean, this Crown plate amp is rated for 70wrms @ 8ohm, I wired the XXX to 2. So at best Ive tossed couple hundered watts to it. Ive got a couple thousand on tap with the KX that should do it just fine //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif.

Woot for a working sub!!!!!

you should just buy a new one n sell this one to me for 10 buckz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
Nevar!!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

My question is... what happens to the glue that gets chipped/melted off...? Does it disintegrate...?
Well due to were the glue is at inside the former most of it would more than likely blow right out the pole vent I would think, Im sure some could fall down into the gap though, but hopefully blow out.

One reason I like to use epoxy.. you can lay the glue, put the assembly in place.. then shim and you are still golden for 2-3 min before the glue sets..
