Recone project - can this be used?

Hey everybody. Lately, I've been researching pretty hard about all of the mechanics and physics that go behind a subwoofer and it's performance. In my personal opinion, I think hands-on approaches are the best way to learn - they just help me the most. Anyway, my brother mentioned that he'd blown one of his subs - it's an old 12" Pyle subwoofer that he used to run in his car. Now, I realize, that being said, that you guys are already thinking 'Ohh, Pyle is garbage, don't use their crap', but please, let me do a little bit of explaining. I want to start reconing and repairing subwoofers to gradually get a better and better feel to working with them. If this sub can be repaired, it probably won't even be used, I'm just doing this for the experience of doing work on subs. Anyway, like I was saying, it's just an old 12" Pyle that blew and seized up on him. I'll include pictures below, but basically this thing is stuck, the coil is totally unwound and jammed inside the bottom of the driver, as you see below:

Now, my question is this - can this subwoofer be repaired? This is my first repair job, should this be attempted after I've acquired a little more experience? She's pretty much stuck in there, how would I go about undoing everything and trying a repair job? Any and all input is appreciated, guys. Thanks.

EDIT: Well, I actually got the coil out, I was almost amazed. Should I order some sort of a recone kit for a smaller sub, or should I like, order all of the parts for this thing online?

Not sure if this is an attempt at a troll or serious but imo you would be better served buying a cheaper motor from the classifieds section (I see worthy motors for around $60 occasionally) that is actually worth sinking the money into for parts then spending the money to recone that pyle. Now if you are dead set on reconing the speaker I would look to PSI a.k.a Fix My Speaker for parts although I don't know if they even carry a coil that would work for that pyle as I'm guessing it has a 2 inch voice coil. So basically I would't waste my time or money reconing it but if you want to go for it.

So basically, you guys are suggesting working with a different driver? Now, like I've mentioned, this is basically for experience, it's not like I'm ever going to actually try to use this for anything. However, being one of my first repair jobs, you guys would probably recommend working on a different driver than this one? I'm not 'dead set' on anything, I'm just looking for something to work with to start getting some experience under my belt for when I actually start doing work on subs that are actually going to be used.

like I said, buy an sa12 motor and basket for cheap, recones are 60 shipped. they are super simple to do, and you will learn a lot. really not much to learn on reconing though... just watch a youtube vid and use some common sense... lol

So, what do the baskets/motors usually end up being for the SA-12s?

50 bucks. recone is 60. easy sell for 175 or so.
So, would a motor/basket like the one on the VVX match up with all of the SAs parts? Is it relatively easy to mix/match similar subs with similar soft parts?

i suppose you could... but you would have no clue of the tsps unless you have a DATS... id just stick with stock...

Nevermind, I guess the VVX basket isn't compatible with the SA-12s soft parts. Could you explain what a DATS is, by the way? (I realize I might sound pretty nooby right now, but I'm just trying to learn. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif )
