Recone Possibility Question

Alright, I recently got into a heated argument with a guy that claimed that a succesful reconing is not possible. He claimed that it can only be done with specific machines or the "dynamics" of the subwoofer will not be right and it will only play distorted music. I personally have never reconed a woofer but have seen friends and many other people that have done it and seems to work fine. I told him this and he said he has been in the car audio business for 5 years and knows how its done because he has been to the JL assembly plant and seen them be put together. He also said there are dozens of JL subs that are "thrown out" every day because their "alignment" is off by millimeters and rendered useless. I called bullshit on him but he still is claiming that a recone is not possible and the only solution is to replace the subwoofer. I said well then why would a company like RE make recone kits for their woofers if they can only be repaired with the factory machines? His reply was, oh thats because RE is a cheap a$$ woofer being sold at fleamarkets, I only deal with top of the line audio equipment like JL and Boston Acoustic. What do you guys think about this?

Some drivers have tighter tolerances than others. Jl does recone dub 7s also //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

and hes right on the fact if your off by MM it will rub.

I realize that if you are off by a MM it will rub but I have seen tools to hold the coil in place to prevent this. He claimed that their is no such thing available and that a recone is not possible on any subwoofer.

its just a shim, i use manilla folders. its really not that hard to recone, its the same process that buildhouses use. JL does use some fancy machinary to do it, but the same thing can be accomplished by hand

alright, cool man, thats all I needed to know. He lost all credibility with me when he asked what kind of subs I have and I said a Treo SSi 15 and he laughed and said, man get a decent brand like alpine, JL or boston cuz treos are cheap and shitty.

Sounds like a shop owners wet dream, somebody only willing to try out mainstream brands, when in all reality you can go direct with alot of the smaller companies and save a penny or 2 and get better service/product.

I always like it when ppl see my blank dustcaps and assume there some flea market subs and then they hear it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
