in the last 4-5 months, i have come a very long way. 4 months ago, i wanted to add a single sub to my stock system, and i was so clueless that i was on ebay bidding on 5 channel amps to power it. while i have done my best to become informed by reading and researching, there is no substitute for experience.

i was just reading an article i was given the link to by foxpro5 and it talked about using diff amps for ur woofers because certain amps have great bass to them. i never considered amps as having much more than crossovers and gains, so once again, i come to you guys for help.

i am a big time MetalHead, and i just spent a fortune on these morel components a few weeks back, and it was worth every penny because i honestly felt like i was hearing metallica's black album for the first time (so crisp).

what brand of amp (and a model if u wanna suggest one) is of a high enough quality that it is a good match with the morels, but more specifically, and also has excellent midbass quality.

here are the specs for the morels. i want volume to spare to i figure i should be looking at something in the range of 200W/channel @ 4 ohms:

Morel Components

(OVERALL specs for woofer and tweeter listed sep. below):

Nominal Impedance 4 Ohm

Power Handling 160W

Max. Transient Power Handling 600W

WOOFER:

Nominal Impedance 4 Ohm

Power Handling 160W

Max. Transient Power Handling 600W

Morel Tweeter:

Impedance 4 Ohm

Power Handling 110W

Max. Transient Power Handling 300W

Are you currently driving those Morels with that 650.4 in bridged mode?

If so I cannot see any good reason to replace it at this stage in the game unless you've simply got money burning a hole in your pocket and you can't stand it...

i think the whole thing about amps sounding better is the difference between class a/b and class d. as long as you go with a class a/b for speakers you wont notice much of a difference if any at all until you get into the way way expensive amps. and what kind of power are you looking for at what ohm?

I guess he's looking for around 200w @ 4 Ohms, possibly?

thats exactly what i was thinking but my install guy, who has been doing what he does for longer than i have been alive (26 years to 24) was strongly opposed to bridging the channels because of distortion. he said it will make it louder but will also make it sound worse. then again, he listens to country and he has the same speakers in his car with only 75W RMS pushin em

lets make this an after-the-fact poll, whatever u guys think about bridging the 4 channel, at least vote 'yay' or 'nay.'

here are the specs for the kicker amp:

Kicker KX650.4:

Power Output:

Input Voltage at 14.4 Volts:

120 watts x 4 into 4 ohms (≤1% THD+N)

170 watts x 4 into 2 ohms (≤1% THD+N)

325 watts x 2 into 4 ohms bridged (≤1% THD+N)

Input Voltage at 13.8 Volts:

70 watts x 4 into 4 ohms (0.085% THD+N)

135 watts x 4 into 2 ohms (0.5% THD+N)

250 watts x 2 into 4 ohms bridged (0.5% THD+N)

I work at a Morel dealer. I say run it bridged for the time being, or perhaps step up into a higher quality two channel amp. I'm not a very large fan of Kicker kx/zx amps (which I also sell).

In my personal car, I'm going to be running Supremos and Elate SW 6's active off of a Diamond D6600.4. I've done a system before with Dotech MKII components run off of a Eclipse 4-channel, as well as an Elate 3-way set running off of alpine PDX 4.150's.

One personal sugguestion would be to change out your CD player. The 9856 is good for ipod, but bad for processing and bad for SQ in my personal opinion.

Other then that, enjoy them, the Hybrid Ovations are a very nice set of speakers.

Also though in my personal experience I would not say it is necessary for you to have over 200 watts per channel available for those speakers. If you want that kind of power and performance you might consider stepping up to the Elates eventually.

too late, at least until i get my yellow audi s4 when i graduate from law school in may, 2007.

ok, so while it may not be necessary to give them 200W per channel, correct me if i am wrong in making the following assumptions:

1. i am not doing the morels any justice whatsoever with what i got pushing them currently. they're begging for more juice, and i with two channels unspoken for, might as well.

2. if i bridged the 4 channel, thereby doubling the wattage to each set of speakers, they would most likely sound a lot better or at least sound as crisp at a higher volume. from what i have read, but do not totally understand, the increased distortion i will get from bridging the channels will be inaudible to the human ear.

if i upgraded to lets say, the JL 300.2 (150W RMS @1.5-4 ohms), would the increase in SQ be worth the $400???

Lastly, regarding your comment on the Alpine HU, i bought it when i was young and foolish (i think it was this past march actually). i had some speakers that blew (pioneers) and the guy at a really bootleg/shady car audio store sent them in for me so that pioneer would cover them under the warranty deal they have with the dealer. as soon as pioneer sends him two new sets of the pioneer components, i will have a $320 credit at his store since i can exchange the new speakers. i have been waiting for the dealer to get the speakers back from pioneer for close to a month now (i was actually on the phone with them for half an hour today trying to see whats taking so long). as soon as they come in the mail, that piece of &**& alpine HU and its impressive TWO BAND EQ are getting tossed into my girl's civic.

thanks again for your advice, was very helpful given that u are a morel dealer.

Correct. Looking at the specs on paper the percentage of THD when comparing running the amp in normal, 4-channel, 4 Ohm stereo mode as opposed to running it as a 2-channel in mono bridged configuration does technically go up. That being said the increased distortion would likely be something you'd need an o-scope to detect and nothing that your ears would be able to discern.
Additionally though that amp is capable of producing X amount of wattage when configured as a mono bridged two-channel that doesn't necessitate you using all of that available power. It only makes that level of wattage at full bore on a test tone anyway and isn't a wattage level you'd normally see day-to-day just playing music. Furthermore you can set your gains appropriately and simply disallow the amp to output that much. If you are uncertain on how to do this the method for properly setting your gain(s) using a digital multimeter is clearly outlined in this thread. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

As I have never done an A/B comparo between a Kicker KX-series amp and a JL Audio Slash-series amp on a set of Morel components I cannot personally tell you that. Maybe someone else with more direct experience with that paarticular comparison can chime in here.

I was unaware that the 9856 only had a 2-band EQ. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gifNow I know.

wow, i appreciate (as always) ur advice prowler. u and i are light-night-mainstays on these boards it seems.

regarding the rather specific diff in SQ i would receive if i upgraded to that specific JL amp; what i meant to ask was if that, generally speaking, the benefits in terms of SQ, the lifetime of the equipment, and everything else would make it worthwhile to upgrade to a nice 2 channel, despite the fact that i have a perfectly good amp (in my limited estimation) and a new amp will run me at least 400 bones if i get the right one.

i am pretty psyched to get that pioneer HU in it, not only for the 16 band EQ and the pretty impressive features in terms of HP and LPF, but also because from what i understand, the upgrade from the 2V to the 5V preamp outputs will be HUGE. i only wish i knew what all that meant when i bought the HU. i am, for all intents and puroses, on my second system, since the speakers i originally bought only lasted a few weeks, and i am getting a JL 1000.1 amp and 2 10W7s from my brother this weekend.

Frankiebones...may I suggest an Arc XXK2500. Its is my favorite 2ch a/b amp to date, and I even have to say it very much let me get over the fascination I had with my Kicker ZR1000 as the ultimate class a/b for 2ch stereo use or sub amp.

With the few passive setups I ran with this amplifier and even Morel Hybrid H8.1(8ohm) midbasses, I experienced effortless and precise midbass, with neverending headroom it seemed....

The guys at Arc are very fond of Dyn speakers. Morel doesant fall too far from the type of sound. Neutral, with a hint of warmth and laid back. The Arcs are ballsy and from my experience a tad on the clinical side. Which makes for an excellent match IMO to squeeze every bit of dynamics from those speakers.

Good luck.

thanks for the advice. how much does the 2500 go for? 270Wx2 @ 4 ohms might be a little more than i am looking for (and also may be more that i can afford, what with my $50/day weed habit).
