rear tray mods...worth the effort?

I got a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant ES and I got 2 Alpine SWX 10" subs in my trunk. My problem is that my trunk is very well insulated. My rear tray is a composite fabric that looks like insulation, and parts under that have an additional layer of insulation. Also below that at least 85% of the rear tray is enclosed with unnecessary metal. Im a little annoyed because somehow I think if I had a hatchback or SUV that my SPL would be twice as much. I'm thinking of maybe removing the rear tray and creating my own. I don't wanna move the stock speakers that are there. Would it be worth sawz-all-ing some unneccessary sheet metal and making my own mdf rear tray with big *** ports or something? Anyone think that all this time/effort/money spent would give any noticable increase in SPL for me? Any ideas?
