really like these subs

lol i dont run DC. i have and audioque that is rated exactly the same and 1krms 2kmax and i run the same amp so the same 2400 and my sub never gets hot... i can play it all day. so yea i guess im an idoit???
Yes, AQ underrates their stuff by a lot, especially the HDCs. Just because one brand of sub can take double its RMS, doesnt mean all subs should be able to take double their RMS. RMS ratings are there for a reason, ya know? And if you are going to say AQs are better than DCs because the manufacturer rates them a lot lower than they should be, thats like saying because Sundown amps do more power than they are rated, but Zapcos typically dont, Sundown is a superior brand. Bad way of looking at things.

yea i understand that. but i just figured since dc seems so highly praised by everyone that they could take it...

Let me address this underrating stuff for a minute. In many cases, its simply a marketing tool. In other cases, its a safety decision to avoid blown products giving the company a bad reputation. And, some companies go completely the opposite direction and 'overrate' their products to make them appear better than they actually are (usually the lowest end brands).

Say a company built a 1000 watt amp. It would produce 1000rms @ a given impedance. Now say they advertise the amplifier as a 1200 watt amp. The first time someone on the internet bench tests one and realizes it produces less than advertised power, its instantly deemed poor quality. Or, imagine they advertise that same amplifier as an 800 watt amp. Someone bench tests it and is pleased to find it is underrated (1000w instead of the advertised 800watts). Now its deemed a high quality product. In reality, both amps are the same amp, and quality has been determined based only on the decisions made by the company's marketing department as to what to 'rate' the amplifier as. How many of you guys, of us guys, have fallen into that trap before? Most of us? Almost all of us? All of us? Too many of us. Dont let power ratings and marketing gimmicks determine quality in your eyes.

People overgeneralize power sent to a speaker. How have we determined one brand of speaker 'can take double its RMS'? Some guy with a 90amp alt and 8 year old stock battery hooked a 2400 watt amp to his sub and it didnt blow? Did he use music with a lot of bass in it to 'test' the sub, or music with not as much bass? Test tones? For how long? What was the impedance rise in his enclosure?

Much like my response above about 'underrated' and 'overrated' amplifiers, power handling specs are not a good determining factor for subwoofer quality. But even worse for subs than amps, because far too many factors affect the actual power the subwoofer sees (iow mechanical and thermal stress) to make any realistic judgment off what is even considered a 'real world' example.

yea i fell into the power acoustiks bamf trap for the 5500d. but i did a complete turn around

well i mean i dont have any subs yet.. its all for a future build. i'm just trying to pair subs and amps for when i do buy them. right now my thoughts are 2 DC level 2 12 inch subs and SOME amp thats 600 watts at 2 ohms

Done deal then, get the DC lvl 2's. Get either the MB quart amp listed above or an MB Quart FX1.600. The FX will do 600rms at 2ohms and costs like $120. Get those thrown into a custom ported box and you'll have a pretty sick affordable system on your hands.

For the price of what, something under $500. Sounds good to me. You'll be real happy. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
