today this kid was crusin by in a blazer and hes got 3 12" pioneer premiers with a 1500 watt amp with a sealed box thats not huge at all, i got two 12" L7's and a kx1200.1 amp to them in a 6 cubic feet box thats ported and tuned to 33hz, i thought my shit was real loud, i went and sat in his car and i could like barely sit in it because it was so **** loud, so i told him to check out my setting and shit and he turned up the gain and bass boost and now it sounds soooo loud comparted to what i had it before, like before he adjusted my shit, i would have to put the volume on 48/52 to have it loud, now i go up to 40/52 and its loud as all hell, and i noticed that the subs bounce up and down way more, i dunno if this is normal or not and how do i know if its adjusted right or if i gotta turn it down some?

Well, seeing as how you cranked the gain and the bass boost that's why you are having a change in performance. First, you need to set your gains via the gain setting tutorial. Second, of course your setup will sound louder but at what cost? Clipping your amp is not the answer for getting the extra "loudness." If you want to increase your output level you should invest in a better amp, change your box setup, or something.

thats the thing, i havent heard anything weird or smelled anything weird but i dont wanna blow my subs or amp

well since you let some douche off the street touch your system i'm goin to guess your probably don't have a properly made box, possible port 2 small or something...... lol is it that hard to goto a home depot or lowe's and pick up a 20 dollar dmm to set gains correctly sheesh....

Is it really that hard to do it just by ear? I mean this is a daily driver, right? Just carefully read the gain tutorial, and you should be fine. What kind of vehicle do you have? pics of the box? You should be able to get at least close to him in spl but if you have a trunk car...well...different story.
