reading old HDD

I have a quick question about an old HDD.

The old computer took a poop and I need to recover some data from the seagate HDD. I read through how to install it and all that, but I keep reading that I must partition and format the drive. I am under the assumption that formatting and partitioning clears all the information currently on the HDD.

Is there a way I can read this HDD and get my information from it in the new system? If there is, please inform me or provide me the proper link.

You can use a program to read the drive. Put it in an USB case and rocover your files thats way. Thats what I did.

You would have to set it up as a slave drive. Look up the manufacturer specs on how to set the jumpers on it. Once thats done install it and it should show up.

wait, i was thinking about a laptop. There should be an empty spot in your case for another HD. Hook it up there, then do the recovery.

If you are just doing recovery, you should be fine. You just want the info that was on there before it went bad right?

Yes, I want the information that was on it before the proc. took a shit. If I partition the drive, it will erase the information correct?

From what I have read, you must partition the drive or else you will not be able to install it.

No, you wont need to partition it. Set the jumpers right and install it and you will have access to everything.
