RE HC "phase" question

just hooked up this sub, What exactly does the "Phase" knob do, and what should i have it set at for a single 12" RE HC mounted normally (magnet in box) i imagine it's for ppl who mount thier subs externally, but the manual isn't very clear at all on how to set this.
