well, this is going in an SUV (TBSS), and I've been told ported works beter in this case. as far as power, I want something louder than my 2 10" lightning subs I have in my other truck now. those are hooked up to a 500W USamp thats pretty old now (7 years). I like loud tight bass without too much bogging. I listen to mostly hip hop and dancehall. when I hit up truck cruises wanna be able to thump hard too..hehe...

is that amp 500 rms or 500 peak? im hoping rms - but eitehr way you're prolly gonna want more power too..

what are some "bang for the buck" subs that may be comprable to the RE's?

the RE Se's are alright for the price.. little expensive imo after looking at the stats.. but not terrible. you can also look into some FI Q's (or ssd's)

if you want to save alot of money - mach5 audio isnt bad from what i hear.. but youll probaly want more

could always get an alpine type -r but everyone has one and they sound kinda crappy (hit hard tho and take alot of power)

Image Dynamics makes great SQ subs too but arent the loudest

im sure more ppl here can point you in a better direction - i only have so much expierence with different subs

i suggest quality over quantiy tho - you could always buy one bad *** sub for now... and it will pound pretty hard and in the future if you want more - buy another sub/amp and then really slam (something dd - jbl gtmkII)

Seriously though:

Make your choices what fit your budget and space, then figure out what you have to go from...

I wana spend 600 on a system? I wana spend 2000 on a system.

Then split it up... Even among what you wana spend it on....

Speakers, speaker amp, subs, sub amp. So split it 4 ways with a little left over for wiring.

Subs and sub amp, split it in half with a little extra for wiring...

That what I would do, dont spend 800 on subs and 100 on an amp, dont gimp your system.

JL may be overpriced to some, that hardly makes it (or any other product deemed "overpriced") a shytty product. For what they set out to do, JL makes dam fine stuff.

If you're on a lower budget, there are options out there that are good products and will perform fine. Image Dynamics and Alpine are but two examples. Same goes for a higher budget. Some like speed in the form of a mustang, others in the form of a Vette. Both are great cars

hmm...sounds reasonable...the 12" SE was priced at $230. I dont mind paying that price, but I wanna make sure its worth the cash... 2 12's and 1 1000W amp (U S Amp) to power them...

might i ask which model amp that is they are planning to sell you?
