Some guy is rebuilding '59 ford and wants me to do the stereo work. he got the steel dash remade and closed up any radio holes. He wants to put a head unit hidden away somewhere that he could control with just a small remote. Now i know i can just throw it in the glove box and use the remote whichever unti comes with but.. any opinions on which head untis have real good reliable remtoes? like a good signal? Or does anyone know of some type of other source unit we could use hidden? Thanks!

ur the kid with the explorer right...westons friend?

i dont think a remote for any HU is gonna go thru the glove box....id think ur gonna have to find the remote sensor and mount it somewhere on the dash that it can "see" the remote IR, hell u could like put it on the mirrior or something, no one would ever see it... donno how hard it would be to take the HU apart and get that sensor out tho lol

it's possible to extend the connections from the front of the headunit to the back of the faceplate, and just have the faceplate mounted and have the actual unit somewhere like under a seat, glovebox etc for using the cd's..that would leave you with a lot more mounting options, as it's only like half an inch deep

just be careful with the soldering //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

basically a wire, from contact to contact..extending the point. there's a thread somewhere over on mp3car.com
what about getting an optical audio cable, placing one end of it right up against the HU's IR port, and putting the other end somewhere else... then you could, theoretically, point the remote at the other end of the optical audio cable and press the buttons on the remote. You may want to look into IR relocation as well, as that would probably be infinitly more reliable than the optical audio cable solution.

find a headunit with a remote in plug in the back.. ( pioneer, jvc, alpine, sony) all have this option.. but the higher end models onley have this option.. use a IR eye plug it into the back of the deck. install the eye somewhere.... no need for optical cables... takeing headunits apart ect.....

How about outside the box here.... If driving amps (not to assume you are) but, you could run an aux source of a sat radio (hand-held or with a cute mount) into the aux input of a 3sixty.2.. Then you have one knob to mount somewhere nice to control the volume on the 3sixty.. Then you've got Sat/mp3/etc from that source, and hide the 3sixty as usual... Tune-able by bluetooth palm or win CE device or bluetooth laptop.. There ya go..

might be silly vs a conventional setup, but it's one way IF you're running amps.

However, I have also seen where guys have taken head units, detached the face, tapped onto the contacts and remotely placed the face somewhere up high such as the mirror even.

Thats a GREAT idea... where can I get an IR eye to plug in?

I thought about that... not sure If he wants to run a 360 though bc money

Why don't you make a HU box? Just sits on the floor, so nothing is messed up on the dash.
He doesnt want it seen at all..
