Basically the 7897 has an internal amplifier, which the 7998 doesn't. It also has the i-Personalize feature, which lets you download user settings, such as x-over's and EQ values, and put them on your deck. There are a few other minor things.

I have the 7897, and absolutely love it, it's a great deck.

Yes, they each have 3 4V preamp outputs.
