Questoin about RMS

Think of like this:

A speaker / amp is a car without a radiator.

Peak power says "If you drive down a mountain while giving your car hell and don't care about it overheating, it'll do 200mph".

RMS power says "If you drive down a flat road it will do 45mph without hurting itself.".

Peak power is pretty worthless. It's always smarter to match RMS power.

Is it more of a guideline? The pioneer rev's are rated at a max of 250, but it says 60w nominal.
^^^this resulted in this:
RMS = root mean square
its the continuous power the amplifier can reliably put out
While the first part of this response is correct, RMS = Root Mean Square, the second bit isn't entirely accurate. RMS wattage ratings are not only applied to an amplifier's output. And that's not what the OP was inquiring about anyway.

Christiankills ~ (for the sake of this discussion) In Pioneer-speak nominal and RMS is the same thing. So your Revs are rated for 60w RMS input. While it is true that most (not all but most) of your better quality speakers from recognized manufacturers will safely accept a bit more power than their RMS ratings indicate the peak wattage ratings are nothing more than a marketing gimmick. I would suggest that if you fed those Revs with an honest 250w for more than a short time it would result in some dead Pioneers. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

So, the short answer to your question is Yes, RMS ratings are somewhat of a guideline but one meant to be adhered to fairly closely in most cases.

If they are rated for 60w RMS then an amp that is rated for anywhere from 50w ~ 70w/channel would be a perfect match for them. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Max = .5 x RMS. 250 x .5 = 125 watts

Nominal power and music power handiling aren't always the same. Knowing this, you should be fine with 125 + watts of power. Headroom is your best friend. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Having a little extra power on tap won't hurt and might keep you from killing the speakers with clipping. Speakers such as those Pioneers tend to be in the very sensitive side. They'll get really loud without a lot of power. Chances are that you would never really give the speakers more than 40-50 watts and probably only half that. Most people don't realize how little power they are really pushing to their speakers when playing music. The subs might see a good bit of power on transients, but the mids and highs usually don't see much at all just because of the transient nature of music and the fact that it doesn't take much power to get the mids and highs pretty loud.

Max = .5 x RMS. 250 x .5 = 125 watts
I hope you realize that that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I was just trying to point out that rms is half of peak/max, but got my little equation back asswards //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blush.gif.99bc659ee2012b7d826165e26fb5eebe.gif

BTW, I just bought that Wolfenhog amp....talk about fokin power //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif and oooo neon lights too!!

I'm really learning a lot from these forums //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I was just curious, I'm still on the search for SQL comps, I'm thinking about getting the JL XR's or the Rev's and either the orion 3002 or the audiobahn A4002T to amp them.
