It goes by amperage, not wattage...

As long as you're between 60 and 100A or so of current draw, 4awg should work quite well.

You can always use bigger wire than you need. It won't hurt anything. It will probably cost a bit more but the bigger wire is already run in the event that you want to upgrade and you won't have to throw out the initial wiring when you NEED bigger. In the long run, it will save you money to run the biggest wire you think that you might ever need the first time.

actually you would save money by purchasing 3 17' strands of 8 gauge wire than buying 17' of 4 gauge...

yeah but that is a pain in the *** to run and fuse. so i would either get the 4 or get 1/0 and be done with it.
