Question about gain (but not how to set)

finally put in everything and troubleshooted until my first ever system is up and running.

my dad took his voltmeter back to work so i can't use it to set my gains properly until tomorrow.

Questions:

1. Would it hurt my amp/sub/my heart (when my amp/subs blow) if i left the gain and all the rest of the knobs on the amp at the lowest setting until i can set the gain properly?

2. Newbie but, what does the bass boost and low pass settings do? whats the advantage in using them?

any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANKS GUYS.

btw, i feel good about myself that i made my own ported box and installed my whole system. the DIY in me looks like = //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

1. no

2. bass boost will increase the output in a specific range of frequencies, alot of times it is centered around 45hz or so. the low pass filter is the crossover setting, if your low pass filter is set to 80hz the output will begin dropping off very quickly after 80hz.

thanks moe.
is there a way to set the bass boost and low pass filter correctly? should i follow any rules or just have at it? lol
Don't use the bass boost.

And just set the LPF to where ever sounds best. Not really any "right" or "wrong" here, just whatever sounds best. Generally it'll be in the 50hz - 85hz range.
