Publix?

i don't know how a groccery store can afford to pay 100k a year to a store manager. 1 thing is for sure i'm heading to florida when i'm done with school.
Publix is a little more upscale than Krogers, Safeway, etc.

They don't sell as much off-brand. A house brand, national brand, and then a more "elite" brand.

They also sell beer that you can't find in other grocery stores. I shop there so I don't have to use that stupid card.

we have similar stores like that here, but it has too cost a lot to run a groccery store with all the overhead. i only stopped in publix once, but they must be much more expensive then other stores

This thread reminds me of a friend I had in high school who flipped burgers at Wendys and told me how Wendys manages make the big bucks and in 10 years or so he would hopefully be able to manage his own Wendys and live the life of luxury for the remainder of his existence on whatever Wendys managers make.

apparently at publix you can do this.

There is a book called The Undercover Economist that explains how this works. The author is Tim Harford...good guy

The price of comparable Tropicana Orange Juice is about the same (let's say $2.50). Krogers then sells a cheap version, like 5-Alive for $2.00. Publix sells an upscale version for $3.00.

Because Publix doesn't sell the cheap alternative, people think the prices are higher. But like in most cases, people are dumb as shit because they don't compare apples to apples.

People are likely to pay .50 more or so for a superior good. The overhead of a carton of OJ is about the same whether it is 5-alive brand or $3 per 1/2 gallon brand.

Publix also doesn't market itself as a low-cost competitor. It is about service there. For instance, they have a cart of shit they don't even sell but customers request. Say customers request for something that Kroger's sells. They will go over and buy it and sell it to you at the same price they paid. Then you can get all your shopping done in one place.

Because it is percieved to be upscale, people spend more time in the store. You don't have a bunch of welfare moms with 50 kids in tow screaming at the top of their lungs. They don't shop there because they think it is more expensive.

They are selling high margin items at good volume. Plus they are a private company so they can distribute returns to the employers rather than shareholders.

this thread is funnies...

Publix is a good enough store in my eyes, and it's in the top 5 across the nation for best grocery stores according to "the Daily Grocer" and i think it even said "Forbes"....my brother in law is the general manager for a family run meat market so i read this mag while at his store while we we're shooting the sh*t one day...

it did mention that the employers are happier and on an average base they make slighly more money, but it never mentioned that the employees, specifically managers make millions of dollars...

of course this was over a month ago, so this may have changed...

on a side note, when i lived in Denver, King Soopers was the MF spot...i enjoyed that store a great deal, i believe they are an affiliate of Kroger...

Everything is more expensive there. Comparing the exact same product and brand, Publix will always be more expensive that somewere like Wallmart. But like you said, you pay more for "customer service" and not have to put up with the filth that wallmart contains. Me.. I'd rather take my cart of grocerys out myself and save $100.
