Proton amplifiers

My dad's friend who is a home audio collecter has some bnib Proton car amps from way back in the day, the model I remember him mentioning was CA-490, does anybody have some real specs, a manual, and some pictures of these amps? I have only found some power rating online but can't find anything else.

I have a D275 (pic in my album here), but thats the only Proton I've ever owned.

I also looked for info or a pic of the CA-490 for you, but like you said outside the specs theres not much there.

I still own it (and I bought it new), so I guess I like it.

I bought it, and a few months later I saw that my local dealer had a clearance on Zapco, so I didnt run the D275 very long.

It has a lot of power, rated at 85w per ch, but it has a power supply with huge reserve capacitors ("Power On Demand",actually a copy of NAD's "Power Envelope" circuitry in their older home amps) which lets it put out 300w per channel on music peaks.

I may need to bring it back into service so I can use the Zapco as a temp sub amp.

Those CA Protons like the CA-490 actually have a reputation that seems legendary for sound from what I just read in looking through my search.

If you can use its staggered wattage (30wx2 & 60wx2) you'll probably love it.

I can't remember how many of this series he has, I believe he said he had at least 2 of these models. I won't get them until Christmas when I fly home but trust me I plan on using them in a nice build for next season of my sq system =]

Holy nostalgia! Those were very well regarded amps in the day. Should hold their own against anything out there.

Oh man, I'm really excited now. Too bad there isn't more info on them, for now I am just waiting for him to send me pictures of the stuff he has. I know he also has one of their tape decks bnib.
