proper midbass from a DIY 2 way?

you sturrin at me brah?
here's what i have right now.

alpine 9887

crossfire vr602 (150x2 @ 4 ohm, 12v) running a pair of alumapro alc components

kicker kx2500.1 running a ported dd 9518g

us acoustics usa4050 (4x50 @ 4 ohms, underrated)

my alumapros are mounted in the door, 6.5 inch driver, wouldnt be difficult to fit a 7 inch in the same spot, 8 might be pushing it. the tweets are mounted high in the door.

my options are

a. keep the same location, buy a really nice DIY 2 way set, use my crossfire for the mids and usa for the tweets.

b. do a set of a custom kicks for a 4-5 inch mid and tweet, use the door for dedicated midbass. obviously more time, effort and money.

are there any high end mid drivers that might fit the bill given that ~175x2 @ 4 ohms from my crossfire? enough midbass to keep up with my 18 and still blend nicely with the tweet is what i'm after.

Do B...as you increase driver size you decrease the frequency at which a driver starts to beam (AKA where the response begins rolling off when mounted off axis). I wouldn't run an 8 inch midrange unless I had a stout tweeter that I could crossover at 2khz or below...

the driver i'm looking at is an xbl^2 driver, updated version of the extremis basically, supposed to be better in everyway and work well for dedicated midbass or 2 ways with low crossed tweets. the tweets are said to be ok down to 1.5, i'm planning to cross at 1.8-2k, 100w rms so bridging the zed amp to the tweets, using the crossfire for the sdx7s.

i think it will be a nice compromise, saving the expense of doing custom kicks now, but still should sound nice, and the driver will integrate well into a 3 way if i go that route later.

That sounds like a good plan then...I say go for it, looks like you are starting with good drivers. Just be careful with the tweeter //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif You can always rip it out and do 3 way later...

the tweeter is gonna take some working to get in there, its so much bigger than what i have now. probably going to glass it, but i've never done it before.

Just take your time with fiberglassing, rushing will only lead to imperfections and frustration...

yeah but i'm not a very patient person, and i could see myself rushing and f#cking it all up. what would a small fiberglass job like that run at a shop, 200ish?

ran into a bit of a snag with ordering everything. the sd7's are 100w rms, i'd like to have 2-300 for headroom, but they're only available in 8 ohm drivers. i can get an underrated 150x2 @ 4 ohms from my usa4050 if i bridge it, and maybe have 175-200 for it. so i'm going to wait until i get paid end of next week, think about my options. i got a little excited this weekend, picked up that amp, the dayton tweets, and about 200 dollars worth of supplies for cleaning up my install a bit and splitting power since i'm running 2 amps for my highs.

need to pull my doors apart this weekend and check my depth and clearance too, these drivers are almost an inch and 1/4 deeper than my alumapros.
