Problem setting gain by ear

I'm having a problem setting my sub amp gain by ear. I don't hear any mechanical noise or 'distortion', I just hear the car rattling apart and I feel blood gushing from my ears when the gain is turned up.

I'll be at the MECA freeze fest next week so if anyone helps me set my gain with an o scope that would be appreciated

then remove the enclosure from the vehicle, set it on the ground, and it won't seem near as loud. then you can focus on how the subs sound.
