Clemson Student Hit By Bus

CLEMSON, S.C. -- A Clemson University student was hit by a bus at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Freshman Kellie Jureka, 18, was was treated by Clemson University Emergency Medical Services personnel and transported to Bowman Field, where she was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Initially, there were conflicting reports about the severity of Jureka's injuries, but according to the Greenville Hospital she was in serious but stable condition as of 4 p.m.

Jureka, who is from Lexington, S.C., was struck by the Clemson Area Transit bus at about noon on the Clemson campus on Fort Hill Street about a block away from Calhoun Street.

Investigators have not yet said if there were any passengers on board the CAT bus, nor have the described the circumstances of the incident.

Clemson Dean of Students Joy Smith said, "The thoughts and prayers of the Clemson Family go out to Kellie, her family and friends at this time, and we will be here for her as she recovers from this unfortunate accident."

Clemson University contracts with the city of Clemson for bus transportation services on campus.

S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Apparently the girl was on her phone not paying attention. In all honestly, I feel worse for the bus driver. He was so broken up about it he quit his job right after it happened.

Not to sound cold, but people need to be sitting on a bench while making cell phone calls, not driving, of walking while they should be paying attention.

So far it looks like it could go anyway. This is what someone said who was on the bus

i was in the bus.... it was horrible, the worst thing i've ever seen in my life 

if she does make it she is going to be screwed up for life

 

to clear some things up that i read:

 

-she wasn't on the phone

-it was DEFINATELY the drivers fault - he turned into her.... if he had went straight and slowed down a little he woudl have missed her

-he didn't brake till he hit her

-he had AMPLE time to slow down or turn away from her instead of into her... she didn't walk out right infront of it.... the bus was a ways down the road when she walked out..... not like he didn't have anytime to react

-she was in the middle of the road when she got hit... he turned that way and she was walking to the left... so he turned into her!

-the driver was an elderly man

-the bus was not going around anything or get moved after the accident... he turned into her... i can't figure out why

-she was out in the open walking from the right side of the road to the left and she was pined under the right side of the bus right under where u go to get in and under the right front tire some.... once again... if he went straight and slowed down he woudl have missed her

 

this is a PERFECT example of why they should test these drivers on some type of course before letting them drive.... nobody on the bus said to slow down or anything b/c it was so obvious that we assumed that he saw her.... i saw her WAY before he started turning into her or anything.... i have no f-in idea wtf he was thinking....

But there were a couple witnesses who werent on the bus (who could probably see better) and they are saying pretty much the opposite.

I do know that these buses are like ****ing tanks, they huge *** turbo'd diesel engines. You would have to be completely oblivious to not hear it coming from a mile away. However the buses are known to go barreling down roads way above the speed limit. And I saw the accident, had to walk right past it about 3 times for class. There was blood...a good amount of it and there were no noticeable skid marks.

The area she got hit in is a high traffic area for people crossing the road. Dorms, bus stops, classes, caferateria are all in this area. So its not that unusual that she was in the middle of the road. Why she didn't hear it coming though, thats why I think its partially her fault. Its impossible to miss one go by you unless you are not paying attention...

As for the main idea here I agree with everyone else as to how she didnt hear the bus.
