Military sonars can Emit sounds in excess of 220dbs. 300 miles away these sounds may be 140db's which is about 100x more intense than levels of sound already proven to alter the behavior of whales by inhibiting hearing functionality which whales use for orientation.

When this happens many whales rise or dive too quickly causing symptoms similar to "the bends" Divers get. These symptoms cause the whales to beach themselves and die.
