Is there a difference between doing the ports these 2 ways? If so what are the disadvantages, advantages? And when calculating port lenth, what all is taken into account?

Sh*t! My boxes looked so good haha. Well, one was supposed to have the port just extend horizontally thru the box, like parallel with the front baffle, and the other port just had a second extention coming out from the back wall, perpindicular to the front baffle.
All ports should be on the same plane. Either use the face of the box that the sub is mounted on, or any side other than the opposite of this baffle.

No, not really. But remember, as port area increases, so must port length to keep the same tuning frequency. So generally speaking, port length becomes the limiting factor in systems trying to maximize port area.
very true, but what about increasing the number ports = much longer lengths PER port...

say 1 40inch^2 port @ 20 inches long

vs. 2 (20 inch^2 each) port --- should be around ~30 or so inches long each right?

any truth to that?

Is it a bad thing to have too much port area? I assume having too little will produce a lot of port noise, but are there any downsides to having a lot of port area, as long as you get your desired tuning? Thanks for all the info being posted, learning a lot :)
Typically by using more port area you will decrease the frequency response range. Also the woofer will tend to lose control much quicker when playing notes that are below tuning. These characteristics are very noticable if you go extremely large with the port area, but with a reasonable port size they aren't typically noticed. I personally wouldn't go over 18 square inches of port area per cubic foot of NET box space for daily use and listening.
