Positioning of Box in SUV

for those with jeeps, i have spoke with snoopdan several times about this very issue, and he said he has found in his jeep that subs up and port to the back is the best for spl generally

Recommending, either way I doubt you'll be disappointed.
Aight, thanks. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif The whole slot ports vs. aeroports brings up a good debate. Ppl have told me (nick told me this) that really there is no advantage one over the other, but some ppl swear that aeroports will give u almost a 2 decibal if used properly. What are your all's thoughts? I've never heard the point that aeroports are better off if subs are close to the hatch, interesting.

My last box was 5 cubic feet tuned to about 35hz if I remember correctly for my SX 15 I used to have.

Sub up, ports out the rear. Had three 4 inch aeroports.

Despite being tuned at 35hz, the box sounded amazing. The low end extension was absolutely nuts. Being that each aeroport is what, 13 sq inches, I was running just under 40 sq inches of port area....it certainly seemed like I had more though with the output of that setup.

If you can afford the extra costs (three 4 inchers were $51 shipped) I recommend using the aero's. Awesome product, clean as hell, sound awesome.

So would I order these aeroports from somewhere like PSP, (i think thats what they are called), I'm not exactly skilled at box designing, lilmaniac2 is going to build my box and he said he could do aeroports, but I wouldn't know how many to get. I'm going to be running 2 15" Mags in about 7.5 cubic feet, would like tuning to be at 30Hz, how do I go about figuring out how many aeroports I need, and should I go with 4" or 6 "? Thanks.

Aeroports versus square ports is a flawed debate. How much port area are we comparing? The same amount, or different amounts depending on the box type? Generally speaking, aeroports (and any round ports) are better than square ports due to their uniform shape. More even air flow with less turbulence. But, the advantage of going slot port is (usually) the ability to have much more port area. More port area = less port velocity = less turbulence = less noise and increased output.

They both have their advantages and disadvantages. There is no clear cut best.

Very good point. Having about 40sq inches of aeroport would probably sound similar to having a bit more area with a slot port....generally speaking, of course.

But like you said, it's easy getting a longer port length usually with a slot port. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Sorry to echo you, I just though I would chime in that I agree with the post.

to the original poster- just experiment with it, but facin back will get you the best results, want loud bass don'tcha
Right after the box was built, I was messsin around and stood it up so the subs were firing up. But my box is built to be laying down and firing back. So the subs were like a foot from the roof. Sounding like crap and was not loud. I know this doesen't compare to a box specificlly made to fire up. Anyway, my orginal question was about the distance from the back hatch in SUV's with subs and ports firing back, not what direction subs should be facing.

Is it a bad thing to have too much port area? I assume having too little will produce a lot of port noise, but are there any downsides to having a lot of port area, as long as you get your desired tuning? Thanks for all the info being posted, learning a lot :)

No, not really. But remember, as port area increases, so must port length to keep the same tuning frequency. So generally speaking, port length becomes the limiting factor in systems trying to maximize port area.

Is there a difference between doing the ports these 2 ways? If so what are the disadvantages, advantages? And when calculating port lenth, what all is taken into account?

Sh*t! My boxes looked so good haha. Well, one was supposed to have the port just extend horizontally thru the box, like parallel with the front baffle, and the other port just had a second extention coming out from the back wall, perpindicular to the front baffle.
