Porting?

I read in one of these that Alpine Type R's sound better with a ported box. Why would that be, and what exactly does porting do, give more airspace and therefor let the sub hit harder?

ports almost act as a 2nd speaker. If tuned right.

they have the same effect as blowing over the top of a bottle.

for sound quality, a low tuned box, about 28hz, will give more feel to the low lows and take away some of the boominess.

a high tuned box 37+ hz is spl only. sound quality is not there at all, but its loud as hell

any decent ported box will be louder that sealed, and from my experiences with type r's, they have better sound quality in ported boxes, but only with the right wattage.
